This workshop proceedings focuses on the controversial issue of retention of traffic and location data ("data retention"), as stipulated by European Parliament and Council Directive 2006/24/EC with special focus on the national implementations. The regulatory development in the Czech Republic in 2009–2012, as well as the practice of requesting of the retained data by Police are summarized and presented in the first contribution by Jan Vobořil. Mode of operation as well as other specific details of the data retention legislation in Austria are presented in the second contribution by Matěj Myška. Further contributions include the materials presented at the expert workshop Data retention reloaded: experiences, problems and practice held on 23th April 2013 in Brno are included by Christof Tschohl (main architect of the Austrian data retention implementation) and Michael Schafferer (technical manager of the “Durchlaufstelle” project). The abovementioned contributions are complemented with relevant legislative materials and decisions of the respective national constitutional courts.
