The publication aims to familiarize readers with the broad and crucial issue of democracy. Unlike other books dealing with this issue, this study connects the theory of democracy with more practical issues of contemporary democratic practice. That is why it contains chapters about contemporary democratic political systems, the issue of transition to democracy after the fall of authoritarian and totalitarian regimes or political extremism as a potential threat to contemporary liberal democracies in addition to chapters devoted to the ancient roots of democracy, the philosophical origins of classical and contemporary liberal democracy, and the relationship of democracy to republicanism.
