Dvě svatební komedie
Title in English: Two Wedding Comedies.
The third volume in the series of Student Editions of English Renaissance Drama presents new Czech translations of two wedding comedies—a popular genre of English Renaissance theatre. „Much Ado About Nothing“, one of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays, appears here under a new Czech title in a translation by Anna Hrdinová. By contrast, „Double Falsehood“ by Lewis Theobald—a Shakespeare scholar and playwright of the early eighteenth century—is introduced to Czech readers for the first time in a translation by Filip Krajník. In this play as well, love and friendship are put to severe tests, and the play’s heroes and heroines must demonstrate resilience and moral strength before a happy resolution can be achieved.
Both plays are accompanied by contextual essays and a critical apparatus that help readers understand the texts and situate them within their historical, literary, and cultural contexts. This student edition is intended for a broad readership, including secondary and university students as well as readers with a general interest in literature, theatre, and culture.
