Naše Hrabyň
Psáno Hrabyňákům, co přijdou po nás za sto let
Title in English: Our Hrabyň. To the people of Hrabyně who will follow us a hundred years from now
Almost ninety years ago, Karel Engliš wrote a confession to his native village. It is only now, however, that the book is to be published in its entirety, in accordance with the author's wishes.
First the book was banned by the new communist regime, then the manuscript was hidden and stored in various archives. A part of it was published in 1999 under the title "Hrabyň mého mládí“ (Hrabyň of my youth). Thanks to the efforts of Karel Engliš's family and other experts, the entire manuscript has been collected, deciphered and rewritten over the years, the pictures have been completed according to the author's notes and everything has been prepared for a new edition.
The reader can now read the distinctive and readable story of a native of Hrabyně, an important scientist, national economist, politician, rector of Masaryk and Charles Universities, who spent the rest of his life in Hrabyně.
The text is accompanied by watercolours and drawings created for the book by František Vrobel, as well as contemporary photographs, drawings and documents from Engliš's memoirs. The book is complemented by the recollections of Engliš's contemporaries as well as in-depth explanations by historians. It thus constitutes a valuable new historical source and offers the reader an experience expressed in the author's wish: "I thought that by writing these memories I would preserve them so that others who would come to love Hrabyň as much as I do could live them with me, even if they faded, for centuries to come".
