Title in English: Subject in Modern Japanese
The aim of this study is to introduce a theory of linguistic description of certain constructions within the grammatical system of modern Japanese. The author focuses on the constructions of noun phrases with postpositional morphemes ga and wa while evaluating their characteristics with respect to the linguistic category of the subject. His analysis assumes the position of functional and cognitive linguistics, considering also typological applications of the subject in modern linguistics. The study is situated in a broader context of Japanese linguistic theories dealing with the subject but it also outlines the evolution of the subject as a general linguistic category, including the dynamics of the attempts to integrate it into the description of the Japanese language.
