The textbook aims at introducing complex historical processes connected with the development of the standard forms of the languages in the South Slavic language region (that is, the present-day area of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Macedonia and Bulgaria) in the period from the mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius to the beginnings of the movements of national integration. The textbook also includes a periodization of the development of the individual contemporary South Slavic languages and an overview of the present-day languages in Europe.
