Title in English: Faith Inscribed Beneath the Skin. Tattooing in the World of the First Christians
Tattoos – nowadays a modern trend, formerly a mark of convicts, a code of the criminal underworld, or an “exotic element” of distant cultures. But also a sign of faith in the Christian God? The authors turn to the first seven centuries of our era and examine the relationship of early Christians to permanent body marking. They present historical texts and archaeological finds and describe the forgotten meanings of bodily signs in the context of the religious disputes of the time.
