This publication is a result of a project of field research of historical fabrics stored in the parish collections of the Brno diocese. The introductory essays are devoted to the characteristics of the material under study and its setting in the European context, as well as to the general history of liturgical vestments, their specifics and their significance in the past and in the present. The catalogue part of this book presents a selection of patterned luxury fabrics from the 17th and 18th centuries from the parish collections of the Brno diocese. The presentation of the individual reconstructions of the pattern of the fabrics, in the context of a partial technological description, allows the changes of the textile decoration in relation to the technology of production to stand out. Extremely valuable Asian and Italian patterned velvets from the 17th century have been preserved in the collections. The core of the surviving 18th-century liturgical vestments consists mainly of production from French and Italian workshops, but fabrics from Southeast Asia have also been preserved. The book is intended especially for art historians, restorers and designers, for whom it can be a valuable source of instruction and inspiration.
