Zadání, umělecká úloha a funkce v architektuře a ve výtvarném umění
What is the meaning of the terms assignment, artistic task and function? How can they be understood, applied and examined in architecture or the visual arts? And are these concepts still valid? These and many other questions are asked by the authors of the monograph Assignment, Artistic Task and Function in the History of Art and Architecture, which is based on the conference of the same name and the following workshop held from 2 to 4 June 2022. It is the third publication in the series devoted to the theory of architecture – its methodology, terminology and other aspects of research – and now also the theory of fine arts, under the auspices and guidance of Prof Jiří Kroupa. The publication shows, through individual examples of building and art commissions, not only the changes in the relationship between the patrons and the architects or artists but also the way in which these creators dealt with the given assignment and all the factors that might have influenced the final form of the work. The issues are examined over a wide time span, from late antiquity to the present day, on a sample of buildings and works of art that are diverse in both form and function.
